Sousa Middle School Attendance Policy

  • Students are tardy after 8:45 AM
  • If a student arrives after 9:00 AM, they should report to the Main Office where a parent will be contacted prior to admittance to class. 
  • There will be a mandatory parent conference after three cumulative absences. 
  • Students with 10 or more unexcused absences are considered truant, and will be referred to court services for truancy. 

Student Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Our goal for student arrival and dismissal is to ensure student safety as they transition to and from school. Please review the following procedures with your child.


  • Students will be let into the building in the morning at 8:00 AM, and will go the cafeteria, where there is supervision.
  • At 8:15 AM, students will be given the option of staying in the cafeteria or going into the gym.
  • Any student who arrives at school after 8:35 AM, but before 8:45 AM, will go into the cafeteria where they will remain until students are dismissed to their lockers.
  • Students will enter the building through the doors at the auditorium lobby entrance.  Once they go through the doors they will proceed through the metal detectors, security check, and then transition in.
  • Students arriving before 8:00 AM must remain outside. Students with approved appointments with staff must come through the administrative entrance and report to security and then to the main office.
  • At 8:40 AM, students will be dismissed from the cafeteria and gym and will move directly to homeroom.
  • Students arriving after 8:45 should enter through the administrative entrance and will be marked as tardy.
  • Parents should park in the front of the school or pull up to the curb to drop off students. 
  • No students/parents should enter through the administration side door.   


  • Students will be dismissed by the afternoon announcements by grade level. Students are not to be dismissed by their teacher until their grade level is called for dismissal.
  • All students will exit their floors through the designated stairwell and will proceed out of the side exit located in the student stairwell.
  • Students who participate in after-school activities will be dismissed once all grade levels have cleared the building.  They should remain in class until an announcement has been made.
  • Once announcement has been made to dismiss students who participate in after-school activities, they should report to auditorium lobby, where they will meet their coach/club facilitator.
  • Once students leave the building, they are not permitted back in, unless with an adult or for an emergency.
  • Students being picked up will exit out of the doors at the auditorium lobby entrance.
  • Parents should park along the street in the front of the auditorium entrance.
  • Parents will not be allowed to park or pick up their children along the curb where the buses are parked. Several buses will be lined up along the curb for dismissal.
